Halo, the sole survivor of a shipwreck, is rescued and brought up by a family of Centaurs. However, when she is ten she is captured by a Greek fisherman and sold into slavery. In order to survive, Halo disguises herself as a boy. She soon finds herself caught up in a violent war between Athens and Sparta, but she never forgets her quest to find out who she is and where she really came from.
